2. Supporting the Liver(肝臓のサポート)

### **Understanding the Liver** This is the first step to boosting your detox capabilities. It all starts in the liver... It is the bodies primary detox organ and is basically just this biochemical processing hub that breaks down and eliminates harmful substances. It does this through a dual-phase enzymatic process that both play a different role: **Phase 1:** This is where any fat-soluble toxins are delt with. The cytochrome P450 enzyme family are the compounds responsible for this phase, and they work by catalysing the oxidation, reduction, and hydrolysis of toxins into more reactive forms. This is great in that it makes certain toxins more water-woluble and thus easier to excrete, but, in some cases, it makes these toxins temporarily more harmful because of the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon their conversion. To counteract this, the liver is heavily reliant antioxidants such as **glutathione**, **Vitamin C**, and **Vitamin E**, which (as we have discussed in previous guides) neutralize ROS and protect cellular structures from oxidative damage. I will talk more on this in a moment... **Phase 2:** This is known as the conjugation phase, and is where toxins are then chemically bound to other compounds so that they can be removed from the body. This process involves several key pathways: glutathione conjugation, methylation, sulfation, glucuronidation, and amino acid conjugation. There is no need to go into detail into all of these, but to explain a couple of these pathways, glutathione conjugation for example, links toxins to glutathione, rendering them water-soluble and ready for excretion, whilst methylation attaches a methyl group to specific toxins, further neutralizing them. The final thing to mention is the liver's production of bile. This compound is critical for emulsifying fats and facilitating the excretion of the more stubborn fat-soluble toxins that cannot be directly eliminated through the kidneys. Once toxins have been processed through these phases, they are either excreted into bile and eliminated via the digestive system or filtered by the kidneys and expelled in urine. With this understanding of how the liver works now, lets look at how we can improve these various detox functions it performs. This can be done through simple lifestyle interventions, and through more advanced supplementation. --- ### **Key Liver Supporting Measures: The Basic Lifestyle Additions** *Most of you are probably nailing most of this, but it is important to go over it all anyway.* **1. Liver-Supporting Foods** - **Citrus Fruits:** Foods like lemons, limes, oranges etc. These are rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants and bioflavonoids which all enhance the liver's detox capacity. A key flavonoid to note in these foods is one called naringenin which is amazing at protecting the liver against oxidative damage and repairing liver cells, while improving bile flow, allowing for proper toxin excretion. Start squeezing lemon/lime into your water, and consume more oranges/orange juice. - **Garlic:** Garlic contains a compound called allicin which is important for Phase 2 Detox. This is because it boosts the production of glutathione which is that master antioxidant and potent detox compound I've mentioned before. Add more of this into your diet by simply cooking with organic garlic. Its a simple but effective liver-boosting trick **2. Basic Lifestyle Habits** - **Regular Exercise:** This is a simple one. It improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, ensuring that toxins are transported effectively to the liver for processing. Moderate, consistent activities like walking and strength training are my favourites for this. Sprinting is obviously the other great option. - **Sleep Optimization:** The liver performs many of its detoxification and repair functions during deep sleep. Prioritize 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to reset and give your liver time to regenerate and perform its critical detoxification tasks. To do this properly, follow our sleep guide. - **NO Alcohol Consumption:** Alcohol is a crazy burden on the liver. It is metabolised into acetaldehyde which is a very toxic compound that depletes glutathione and causes oxidative stress. Its simple - no drinking. - **Avoid Basic Environmental Toxins:** Minimise exposure to pesticides, heavy metals, and indoor pollutants to reduce the liver’s workload. Here is how to do this in short: Filter your water with a reverse osmosis filter (see link in products page) limit seafood, use stainless steel cookware, use 100% natural hygiene products, choose organic produce, avoid processed foods, and use air purifiers to improve indoor air quality. (see link in products page). --- ### **More Advanced Liver Support: Supplements** **Phase 1 Support: Enhancing Initial Detoxification** Phase 1 of liver detoxification involves converting fat-soluble toxins into intermediate metabolites via oxidation, reduction, and hydrolysis reactions as we discussed at the start. As we mentioned, this phase has a side effect of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), that can actually damage the liver's function. This means we must support it with supplements and antioxidants. Here are the best compounds for Phase 1 support: - **Glutathione** | **250-500mg per day**: Supplementing with glutathione enhances intracellular levels, improving the liver's ability to manage oxidative stress and detoxify toxins. The best form of glutathione is transdermal glutathione, and the link for this can be found in the products library. - **Milk Thistle** | **500mg per day**: This plant extract protects liver cells and helps them repair damage caused by toxins. It boosts glutathione levels and reduces stress on the liver by shielding cells from harmful substances. - **Dandelion Root | 500-100mg per day**: Dandelion root helps increase bile production, which is essential for breaking down and removing toxins, especially fat-soluble ones. It also has mild diuretic effects that help the kidneys excrete the water-soluble toxins. - **TUDCA | 500mg per day**: This is a bile acid that improves bile flow, meaning it helps the liver eliminate toxins more efficiently. It also protects liver cells from inflammation and stress caused by toxic overload. - **Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols) | 800-1000mg per day**: Vitamin E acis another antioxidant. As mentioned in previous guides, it is extremely powerful. In this use case, it offers protection for liver cells from the discussed oxidative damage that comes about in Phase 1. - **Vitamin C | 1000mg per day**: As a water-soluble antioxidant, Vitamin C scavenges free radicals produced in Phase 1 and actually regenerates the other antioxidants we discussed - glutathione and Vitamin E. It also supports the cytochrome P450 enzymes which makes sure that Phase 1 detox functions properly. **Phase 2 Support: Completing the Detox Process** Phase 2 detoxification neutralizes the reactive toxins produced in Phase 1 by binding them to other molecules, making them safe and easy to excrete. In terms of supplementation here, we're going to supplement with the compounds that the liver requires to bind these toxins to. These include: - **Methyl Donors (e.g., Vitamin B12, Folate) | 800 mcg methyl folate per day**: These nutrients supply methyl groups, which the liver uses to deactivate toxins. They’re essential for this phase of detox and also help reduce harmful substances like homocysteine in the body. - **Glycine | 1-3g per day**: Glycine is an amino acid that binds directly to toxins and neutralises them. It also supports the production of glutathione, amplifying the liver’s detox power. - **Taurine | 1.5-3g per day**: Taurine is critical for bile production, helping the liver flush out fat-soluble toxins. It also reduces inflammation and supports overall liver health. - **Methionine (from meat)**: This sulfur-rich amino acid helps the liver create glutathione and supports sulfation (a process that makes toxins easier to excrete)
