The Flat Feet Guide

### **Importance of Fixing Flat Feet - The Link To Facial Structure & Myo**
The first thing you need to understand about this issue of flat feet is that it isn't just a cosmetic issue. Having flat feet causes a chain of negatives that impact various other areas of your physiology aswell, importantly, your facial structure. **The foot arch is directly linked to Myo - here is why:**
When the arches in your feet collapse (i.e., flat feet), the body compensates for this by changing your ankle, hip, knee, and spine alignment. With this spine misalignment, the body then compensates again and moves the head forward. This leads to forward head posture, which then causes a whole cascade of issues to your facial structure. Forward head posture restricts the airways, forcing the tongue to sit low in the mouth. This reduces upward pressure on the palate from the tongue which is crucial for facial structure as you know. In short, flat feet = worsened facial structure, and so this is why we must address this issue.
*Flat feet also cause bow-leggedness = decreased height; see Heightmaxxing Part 1 in Foundations on how to address this.*

### **How to Fix Flat Feet**
*Firstly, here is what flat feet actually look like:*

If your feet look anything like the foot the left, it is crucial you start taking action on this guide asap. Here is how to fix them:
---
### **1. Strengthening Exercises**
The first method to start addressing flat feet is to strengthen the muscles that actually support the foot arch. This will reduce the strain around surrounding joints and can be done with these simple exercises.
- **Toe Curls:**
- **How to Do It:** Place a small towel on the floor and try to grab and scrunch it with your toes. Repeat for 1-2 minutes per foot.
- **Why It Works:** Strengthens the toe flexor muscles and improves coordination between the toes and arch.
- **Big Toe Press**
- **How to Do It:** Place your foot flat on the ground. Press your big toe firmly into the ground while keeping the rest of the foot relaxed. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10-15 times.
- **Why It Helps:** Strengthens the flexor hallucis longus, which is a muscle that supports the arch of your foot.
- **Calf Raises:**
- **How to Do It:** Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Slowly raise your heels off the ground, focusing on engaging the arch, and lower back down. Perform 2-3 sets of 10-15 reps.
- **Why It Works:** Strengthens the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) and the tibialis posterior, both of which help support the arch.
- **Advanced Variation:** Perform single-leg calf raises to further challenge the arch and balance.
- Complete these daily.

### 2. **Mobility and Flexibility Work**
Next up are some mobility techniques. This is important because if you can improve mobility, you will release tightness in key muscles of the foot, allowing for proper foot mechanics to begin taking place again.
- **Stretching Tight Areas:**
- **Calves:** Tight calf muscles can contribute to flat feet. Stretch them by standing with one foot behind the other, keeping the back heel on the ground, and leaning forward. Hold for 20-30 seconds per side.
- **Plantar Fascia:** Stretch the bottom of the foot by pulling your toes back toward your shin and holding the stretch. Use your fingers or a towel to assist.
- **Hip Flexors:** Tight hips can actually affect foot alignment. Stretch the hip flexors in a lunge position, ensuring your pelvis stays neutral.
- **Foam Rolling:**
- Use a foam roller or a ball to release tension in the calves, the bottom of the foot (plantar fascia), and the tibialis anterior (shin). Roll for 1-2 minutes per area.
- Focus on any tight or sore spots in particular.
---
### **3. Lifestyle Adjustments**
- **Barefoot Walking:**
- **Why It Helps:** Walking barefoot strengthens the intrinsic muscles of the foot, encourages natural movement patterns. Think about it, our feet did not evolve to be in modern shoes. The average shoe is literally just a cage for our feet. Break free, and go barefoot as much as possible.
- **Toe Spacers:**
- **Why This Helps:** Toe spacers help realign the toes and improve the natural alignment of the foot. This is important because the big toe in particular is super important for maintaining and anchoring the foot arch. Similarly, when the toes are properly aligned with toe spacers, the muscles in the foot are activated better throughout the day. These muscles are crucial for supporting your arch, and so developing them helps reduce flat feet.
- **How to Use:** Wear them for 10-20 minutes daily minimum, but as much as desired really.
