The Focus Guide(集中力ガイド)

「Green noise(グリーンノイズ)」「White Noise(ホワイトノイズ)」または「Brain.fm」です。

### **1. Introduction: Why Focus Is Essential In Today's World** The modern world is probably as far away from 'focused' as you could get. Attention has become the new currency, and as a result, there is this endless noise, bombarding, and activity to try and capture yours. In short, distraction has never been more prevalent. On that same token, the modern standard of 'focused work' has also completely deteriorated. With hustle culture as the new norm, work has just become a competition on who can be the busiest, answer the most emails, and attend the most meetings in one day. This is not true focus; this is chaos. What is true focus then? It's a channeling of energy, not a dissipation of it. A process minimising and stripping away, not piling on tasks. At its core, its a combination of clarity, intention and discipline. Without this true focus, success in this life becomes near impossible. Building a business, sculpting a physique, transforming your health, and overall just becoming the highest version of yourself - focus is the common thread that makes all of it possible. With this in mind, we must now learn to cultivate it, and that is where this guide comes in. To get straight into things, let us look to the first step in all of this: direction. --- ### **2. Knowing What You Do and Don't Want** The first step to focus is knowing what you want, and knowing what you don't. Simple. Without these two things, you have no way of filtering all of the noise that floods us in the 21st century. It comes back to that famous quote, '"If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable." Focus requires a direction. To create this, sit down with a pen and paper and write. Describe your dream life, the version of you that you aspire to transform into, and get extremely detailed. You should aim to write as much as you can, sparing no detail. Let this vision excite you. After this, it is also crucial to do the exact same, this time for what you don't want. Write exactly what you don't want, the life you would despise to live, and realise that without focus, you could quite easily end up exactly like that. Let the fear of this life empower you to bound in the opposite direction. With this simple, but completely paramount first step out of the way, we can now hone in on the more specific techniques and strategies. --- ### **3. Building a Focused Environment: Physically and Mentally** A cluttered space breeds a cluttered and chaotic mind. To access the true focus I described, you must have a workspace that is focus-optimised. Here’s how to create an environment that works for you, not against you: **Step 1: Declutter to Reduce Visual Noise** Your brain is a spotlight, and so everything in your field of view competes for its attention. Remove unnecessary items from your desk and surroundings. Keep only the essentials: your laptop, notebook, pen, and maybe a plant or two. Store non-essentials in drawers or another room entirely. If your workspace doesn't look something like this, you're probably doing something wrong. Turn off all notifications on your phone and put it in a completely different room. Likewise with your computer, mute notifications, and use focus apps like Freedom or Cold Turkey to block access to websites you know might distract you. The amount of times you check your phone/notifications when working, without even thinking, is unbelievable. With each time you do, your focus gets shattered, so its crucial to implement this simple trick. **Step 3: Add in Helpful Noise** Now that you have decluttered, there are actually some forms of 'noise' that can really benefit you whilst you are trying to focus. Put in some wired headphones, and stick on one of the following playlists on spotify: 'Green noise', 'White Noise' or 'Brain.fm'. I couldn't tell you why, but my work output literally doubles when I listen to this stuff. Give it a try. **Step 4: Create a Focus-Optimised Mind Environment** Creating an environment catered to focus isn't just about the physical environment either. Your mind must be optimised aswell, and the most effective way to declutter your mind for focus is by resetting your dopamine system. How can you do this? A dopamine detox. See the full guide, written just prior to this one - its a complete game changer. --- ### **4. The Focus Hours: Leveraging the Early Morning** If there is one time of day when focus comes most naturally, it is without a doubt, the early morning. The world is still, distractions are minimal, and your mind is fresh. If you work at this time, I guarantee you can accomplish more in two hours, than you normally would in a day of standard work. **The Importance of a Consistent Start Time** When optimising for focus, the key is having a set work time that you abide by every day. If when you work is completely spontaneous, you lose mental bandwidth on trivial decisions like this deciding when to start or which task to tackle first. By working at the same time each day, you shift into autopilot, preserving your mental energy for the work itself. Use the first 30–60 minutes of your focus block for your most mentally demanding task. These are your "golden hours" when you’re naturally sharp and alert. --- ### **5. Biohacking Focus** Once these basics are in place, we can now look to all of the additional supplements and techniques that will supercharge your ability to focus. This all, however, starts with nutrition. **Step 1: Nutrition for Focus** What you eat directly impacts your ability to concentrate, and poor nutrition will dull your mind and give you brain-fog. The perfect place to start is to simply follow the diet guide, however, there are also additional considerations to make to really support focus: 1. **Avoid Large Meals Around Focus Times:** You should have a set time of day when you work by now, and simply making sure you don't eat a meal above around 400 calories before this work time is crucial. Eating too much forces your body to shift energy to digestion and away from mental performance. If I'm being completely honest, I think doing your most intensive morning deep work fasted is actually most beneficial for focus. If you want to optimize most for mental clarity etc, consider not even eating until after your work. If you are going to eat however, consider adding in some of these foods... 2. **Foods That Support Cognition:** Egg Yolks, Grass-fed Butter, Raw Cacao and Blueberries are your best friend here. - **Butter** is loaded with butyrate which is a short-chain fatty acid that directly supports brain function. - **Egg yolks** are loaded with choline which is a crucial nutrient for the creation of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory). - **Raw Cacao** contains theobromine and flavonoids which act as a mild stimulant and boost bloodflow to the brain - Blueberries contain anthocyanins which are amazing antioxidants that improve memory and blood flow to the brain. 3. **Ensure Hydration:** This is paramount. Even slight dehydration will really impact your brains ability to perform. The best way to hydrate before work is simple: high-quality sea salt dissolved under the tongue, and some spring water/organic coconut water. **Step 2: Supplementing for Focus** With diet fundamentals in place, here are the best focus supplements/combinations to use before your deep work session, and why. They are all great for slightly different purposes, but effects will vary on each person. Make sure to experiment and create your own stack for the best results. - **L-Theanine + Caffeine:** This is the staple focus combination. The combination of these two compounds creates this synergy that will boost your focus, but without the jitteriness and crash that often comes with just taking caffeine alone. This is because the Theanine increases alpha brain wave activity which calms your mind. The best dosage is around 100mg of caffeine and 100-200mg of theanine. - **Rhodiola Rosea:** This is another great one. Ive talked about this in other parts of the community regarding reducing stress, but it also offers great mental clarity benefits, especially if you are under a deadline or stressful pressure. The dosage for this is around 200-400mg. - **Bacopa Monnieri:** This supplement is a herb that works for focus in a couple of ways. It boosts blood flow to the brain, whilst also modulating acetylcholine levels (that neurotransmitter I have mentioned previously). Both of these benefits leads to improved memory and creates this 'calm focus' effect. - **L-Tyrosine:** This substance is a precursor to catecholamines, namely dopamine. This means that it increases your motivation, and so can help if you're about to do some mentally taxing tasks that you don't really want to do. The best dosage for this is 500-1000mg, taken 45 minutes before your hard task. - **Alpha-GPC:** This is basically just a very bioavailable source of choline. As discussed, choline is a precursor to acetylcholine which is that crucial neurotransmitter for memory and focus. A GPC also supports the communication between neurons, leading to quicker decision-making, whilst increasing ATP production in the brain. Take 300-500mg before your deep work. - **Huperzine A:** Finally, huperzine A. This compound inhibits acetylcholinesterase which is the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine into a usable form. As a result, it improves concentration. I would recommend taking between 50-150mcg of this, cycling off of it regularly as it can overaccumulate in the body. **Step 3: Breathwork for Focus** Breathwork is the most underrated tools for focus. Your breath directly influences your mental state, and it is in our complete control. All it takes is a couple minutes of this technique and you will reoxygenate your brain and allow it to function properly. Ive spoken about this in other parts of this course, and it is the technique called Box Breathing. Here is how to do it: - Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds and fill your lungs up fully. - Hold your breath for 4 seconds. - Exhale slowly through your mouth for 4 seconds and empty your lungs fully. - Hold your breath again for 4 seconds before starting the next cycle. - Repeat: Perform 4–6 cycles (about 2–3 minutes). --- ### **6. The Focus Ritual: Ritualising Your Work** With all of this knowledge in mind, the final key to it all is to treat your work like a ritual. This essentially just means making what you do before your work a set routine. This is super important, because it creates a set structure. The brain loves predictability, and if it knows what to expect, it preserves its energy for actually executing on the task. You essentially double your chances of entering the flow state if you have a set work ritual, which is clearly very powerful. **How to do this:** To actually do this is, I would recommend creating a pre-work, and post work routine. This is totally up to you in terms of what you actually do, but an example pre work ritual would look like the following: **Pre-Work Ritual** - heanine, Alpha-GPC, Coffee w Coconut Cream - Hydrate with spring water and sublingual sea salt - Put on white noise, close curtains, turn off notifications, move phone out of the room - Review goals for 1 min - *Make sure to keep the routine relatively short. Getting to work is most important really.* --- ### **Conclusion...** Anyway, that wraps up this guide. If you can take action on all of this information, I have no doubt that your focus will increase substantially. Some of the stuff goes without saying, but often in life, its the simplest techniques that offer the best results, especially when compounded over time. The whole point of focus is taking away, and not adding, so don't get sucked into the whole pseudo-productivity world. At the end of the day, just sitting down and doing the work is the most important thing...
