The Asymmetry Guide(非対称性ガイド)

Asymmetry is possibly the most commonly asked problem that people ask me about fixing. It's an issue that everyone deals with to some extent or another, but the good news is there are simple steps that you can take to start reversing this asymmetry. With this in mind, lets just get straight into this actionable guide: --- ### **1. The Main Causes of Asymmetry** Before we get into the steps to take, its important to have a basic understanding of why asymmetry comes about. The two main reasons: **the misalignment of the sphenoid bone** and **tightness in the fascia**. The sphenoid bone is a butterfly-shaped bone at the center of your skull that acts as this keystone to your overall cranial structure. When it shifts out of alignment therefore (due to factors like poor oral habits or even dental work) it completely throws off the positioning of other bones in the skull, causing that asymmetry, mainly in features like your eyes, cheekbones, and jaw. This misalignment then creates a chain reaction, because the fascia that surround these bones then tighten and adapt to these cranial imbalances. Tight fascia then pulls on your facial and cranial structures even more unevenly, furthering the asymmetry even more by causing one side of your face to experience more tension or compression than the other. As you can see, there is this sort of negative feedback loop that occurs, and it all begins with the sphenoid bone. With this is mind, here are some ways to gradually realign the sphenoid bone, aswell as loosen fascia in the relevant areas. --- ### **2. Aligning the Sphenoid: Exercises and Interventions:** The good news about aligning the sphenoid bone is that if you are implementing the core techniques and the advice in the Myo module, it really is only a matter of time before your asymmetry improves. What we must do on top of these, however, is one specific exercise, as well as fascia release. Here are the techniques: ### **Chintucks for Sphenoid:** 1. **Setup**: - Sit with your back supported (e.g., against a wall) - Keep your shoulders relaxed and your neck in a neutral position. 2. **Chin Tuck Execution**: - Slowly tuck your chin downward to create a “double chin” without tilting your head forward. - Visualize your head being gently pulled upward and backward as you tuck, creating length at the base of your skull. 3. **Suboccipital Fascia Engagement**: - Lightly place your hands at the base of your skull and apply gentle upward pressure to enhance awareness and release tension. 4. **Breathing Technique**: - Inhale deeply through your nose, expanding your diaphragm. - Exhale slowly, focusing on releasing tension at the base of your skull and around the sphenoid. 5. **Symmetry Check**: - Ensure your head remains centred with no tilting or uneven muscle engagement. Use a mirror if needed. 6. **Repetitions**: - Hold each tuck for 5-10 seconds, then relax. - Perform 10 repetitions, 2-3 times daily for best results. ### **Fascia Releases:** 1. **Maxillary Fascia Release:** On either side of your nose, press outward towards the cheekbones, moving the fingers in small circular motions to release tension. Make sure to cover the entire upper jaw area. For best results, aim for 2-3 minutes of this massage. 2. **Mandibular Fascia Release:** Do this by pressing into the masseter muscles in circular motions, loosening tightness or knots. Slowly move the fingers along the jawline toward the chin, loosening any tension. For best results, aim for 2-3 minutes of this massage. 3. **Mandibular Fascia Release 2:** Pull the lower jaw forward by placing your index fingers behind the lower teeth and pulling. Stick out the jaw to help stretch things further. Do this for about 1-2 minutes, in sets of 30s. ### **Final Tip:** - One crucial last thing to note is that fascia tightens most when you are in a state of stress. With this in mind, it is therefore crucial that you look to reduce your body's stress levels as much as possible, keeping it in the parasympathetic state. The best way to do this is using the breath. It's a completely free tool that we all have access to, and yet it is so powerful. Perform the following breathwork as much as required throughout the day: **4-7-8 Breathing:** - Sit down, and center yourself. - Inhale deeply for 4 seconds - Hold for 7 seconds - Exhale for 8 seconds. - Focus on breathing deep into the diaphragm, and visualise your facial muscles drooping and relaxing completely on each exhale. Really try to relax as much as physically possible.
