How to Get More Out of Books(本をより深く読むための方法)

Reading is a life-changing habit. You essentially get years of knowledge and wisdom that someone has dedicated their life towards gathering, within 8 hours of your time. Its the highest ROI habit to get into when it comes to knowledge acquisition and ensures your success if you make it a staple. With this in mind, it is something that so many do completely wrong, and so I felt compelled to write this quick and actionable guide on how to get more out of your reading.
Enjoy:

### **1. Choose Your Books Wisely**
Not all books are created equal. Many are just a handful of great ideas padded with hundreds of pages of filler. Instead of diving blindly into every bestseller, be more mindful. Here’s how:
- **Seek Recommendations**: Ask people you admire, mentors, thought leaders for their favorite books. (Good news, all of mine are in this course!)
- **Preview Before Buying**: Watch summaries on YouTube to catch the key points and see if the book is what you're looking for.
- **Commit Financially**: Buy the physical book instead of getting free PDF. Investing in a book increases your commitment to actually finishing it and really extracting its value.
---
### **2. Understand Why You’re Reading**
While lots of reading is gathering information, its also about improving your ability to think and formulate ideas, and improving your creative brain. With this, its important to bear the other benefits of reading in mind:
- **Variety**: Expose yourself to different kinds of books and writing styles. By doing this, you will naturally and subconsciously figure out the best way for you to write/think.
- **Mental Detox**: Reading slows down your overstimulated brain and reacclimates it to deeper and slower thinking patterns which is crucial in this hyper-stimulated modern world.
---
### **3. Create an Optimal Reading Environment**
To truly engage with a book, you need to remove distractions and set the stage for focus. Simple. Here are some ways to do that:
- **Find a Quiet Space**: Go to a library, coffee shop, or quiet corner of your home. Leave your phone behind or put it on airplane mode. Focus. Just you and the book.
- **Bring the Right Tools**: Have a highlighter, notepad/sticky notes handy for capturing key ideas. This is important and I will touch on this in a second.
---
### **4. Develop a Reading Strategy**
Don’t just passively consume words, you need to actively engage with the material. It will make the process more enjoyable, but also will make the ideas stick so much better.
- **Push Through Resistance**: The first few pages of any reading session can feel like a slog, especially if you’re accustomed to short-form content like most of us are. This acclimation period is normal. Once you get through it, you’ll find the flow.
- **Narrate in Your Head**: Read as if you’re telling the story to yourself. Use intonations and a tone that makes the content more alive and enjoyable.
- **Annotate as You Go**: Highlight important points, underline key phrases, and jot down reactions or questions in the margins. Write your own comments, like “interesting,” “needs more thought,” or “?”. This sounds weird but will help you stay engaged.
- **Pause and Summarize**: After finishing a chapter or section, recap the main ideas in your own words. If you can explain it clearly, you’ve truly understood it. This is amazing for more knowledge dense books.
---
### **5. Turn Reading Into a Creative Spark**
Books arent just for knowledge/teaching, they inspire, and the act of reading will often trigger connections to your own ideas. With this in mind:
- **Let Boredom Work for You**: Reading can feel slow compared to hyper-stimulating media, but this is an advantage. Your brain, seeking stimulation, will often produce ideas more engaging than the book itself. Use this natural process to your benefit.
---
### **6. Make Reading Easier and More Enjoyable**
For reading to become a habit, you need to create the right mental state:
- **Read When De-Stimulated**: The best times are early in the morning or before bed, when your brain is naturally calm and less distracted.
- **Supplement Your State**: L-theanine, magnesium, or taurine are some of my favourites. They will calm you down and allow you to focus much more.
- **Start Small**: Don’t aim for hours of reading if you’re out of practice. Start with 10–15 minutes and gradually build from there.
---
### **Conclusion:**
If you can take action on some of these points, reading will start to become much more enjoyable, but also more useful. Doing these things took me from someone who couldn't read for more than a few minutes per week without getting bored to easily reading for hours on end and actually preferring it over social media. It's pretty easy to get to that point if you're consistent, and it is certainly rewarding...
